New earrings and the Friday Finds

::sigh:: I am on the 3rd round of photographs of the new stuff, and ALL of them just look blechy. I am getting tired of taking pictures of the same stuff and over and over. I have never had this much trouble before, which is good, but I have to say, it's really frustrating. One of the pictures that did come out, though I have yet to shoot an alternate view of it, what with all the hideousness of just landing the first, is of the Libby faustite/apple-green turquoise earrings. I can not determine whether the stone is actually faustite or apple-green turquoise, since both natural stones are the same color, with pretty much the same color matrix. Faustite is a member of the turquoise group and gets its color from zinc, as opposed to the copper which gives turquoise its traditional blue coloring. It's a beautifully vibrant stone, with a grey to brown matrix, but these are color-treated - I suspect because they have a lot of grey matrix in them. I think they would have been really cool-looking on they're own, but they're still a really nice color and hand-wrapped in sterling silver. It took me a while to figure out how not to lose the curve in the final wrap, and identical symmetry is out of the question, but I like how they turned out.

I also have some pretty neat smokey quartz earrings out of some really awesome tumbled smokey quartz, beautifully clear. I'll try to get that photo up next. I wish I could figure out why I suddenly can't take a decent photo to save my life. :(

And now, the Friday Finds...on Saturday. Of course. :)

Kudos to Annette Rubin, President and CEO of Belli Cosmetics. It's about time someone came up with a website that utterly panders to the vanity of pregnant women. And no, I do not mean that in the sarcastic way in which it came out. I mean pregnant women deserve to be pampered and indulge in products designed especially for them, and Ms. Rubin has done so beautifully. She's no dim bulb when it comes to marketing, either. Kudos, Annette. Good job.

These are handsdown the coolest wall stencils I have ever seen, and you can buy the color-coordinated paint, too, so your stencil comes out the way it's pictured. For that matter, you can buy anything else you might need to stencil. It's a pretty neat site, if stencilling is your bag.

I do not care for Uncommon Goods in general, but these potato parchment bowls are way cool and really pretty. It's kind of amazing someone came up with the concept, and I have to laud artist Margaret Dorfman, hence the pimp.

Okay, shoppers. I leave you to your own devices with these, but they are not my cup of tea. At all. Especially at 32 bucks a pop.

The geek in me loves The Cubes, on the other hand. Seriously, I think they're brilliant, and I love the little slide show intro on the main page, with Also Sprach Zarathustra playing under it. The whole thing is genius.

And now if you will excuse me, I have a bunch of pendulums to make for a meeting with a vendor this week.

que sera sera,
Jenie

Ooooh...love the earrings (and, btw, I vote for them being faustite) and The Cubes is HILARIOUS! Looks JUST like my desk at work.

Which is actually kind sad when you think about it...sigh.

I vote for faustite, too. I just can't state definitively one way or the other, and they were labelled turquoise... Thanks for the feedback on that, for sure, because no matter how hard I look or who I ask, I haven't gotten an answer. Where's a gemologist (or serious rockhound) when you need one?!

and oops; I know - don't the Cubes crack you up? I am in love with them. :)

Sorry to disappoint...but I vote for treated green turquoise from China.
The zinc in Natural Faustite generally produces a more yellow color.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback, Anon. They've definitely had a kelly green dye dumped onto 'em, so I'm really leaning toward faustite. The matrix doesn't really fit turquoise. However, you could very well be right. I've never seen faustite first hand if this isn't it; for that matter, I've never seen apple-green turquoise first hand, either. So you could be right. I don't think it's from China, though. Most of that tends to be very poor quality chalk that has been impregnated with colored epoxy, and these have not been. They've just been dyed, and aren't soft. That's one reason I went with faustite; they're not as soft as regular turquoise, and the color is not impregnated. Hmm. Now I have to hunt more info.

While I have seen both faustite & apple-green turquoise first hand, I have not seen your earrings "first hand". So I guess we are even. LOL
Faustite is actually very rare, and there is a lot of treated material coming from China these days.
Is it okay to list another site that is discussing Faustite on their posting board???
Thanks

Heck yes, list away. :) (and thank you for asking!) I appreciate the information, frankly. I like learning, and I especially want to learn more about semi-precious stones. It makes me a better buyer and allows me to obtain higher quality stones. So bring it on, feel free to comment any time, and thanks!

And I forgot to ask, what are the differences in the two stones that you have observed? Because frankly, until about 6 months ago, when I got that stone, I had never even heard of apple-green turquoise. I am thinking if faustite is that rare (which none of the sites about it that I found said it is, darn them), then I am thinking you are correct, and it's turquoise, because while it was relatively expensive, it was not *that* expensive; it was on a par with stabilized turquoise.

anyway, thanks. :)

I hope I am posting the website link correctly...so it will open for you. If you read the current messages you will find several comments about Faustite. If you check out the links page you will see some amazing jewelry made with green and/or blue turquoise. Natural American Turquoise. :o)

I joined the group (after reading) and will post some images. I also realized the picture I put up here was too green and made it closer to the yellow green they are. I must have been zoned on the dried rose stem they're hanging from and trying to get all the weird orange out of it, and forgot to check the color of the stone against the earrings. Duh. J

After opening the larger picture of your earrings... hmm... I am not sure they are turquoise or faustite!! Interesting looking, anyway. I am not sure why anyone would dye Faustite.

::sigh:: I wonder what they are, then? The dealer I got them from tends to be responsible about labelling stones, though if his supplier mislabelled them... I looked high and low on the web when I got them, and the only stone I could find that they were was either faustite or turquoise. Doggone it. :( I'll post them to the group once someone says go for it. Maybe somebody there can help. J
