When I was a kid, my brothers and I used to go "exploring"
in the Texas hill country, roaming the wide open spaces looking for "cool
rocks": fossils, arrowheads, and the ever-elusive geode or gem stone we just
knew was out there, waiting to be found. All this collecting of rocks and roaming
the countryside prompted in me a love of nature, which eventually led me to study
landscape design and to read a lot about rocks and semi-precious stones. Since
I have the attention span of a puppy when I'm not doing something fun and creative,
during summer of 2003, I took a sterling silver handcrafted jewelry class and
discovered that while I do not wear much jewelry, I really like making it. I started
experimenting with Swarovski crystal, freshwater pearls, and semi-precious stone,
putting sterling silver and handknotted silk necklaces together for anyone who
would wear them. My friends started buying and ordering jewelry I designed just
for them, and once they were covered, I began Dragonfly Design, where I now delight
in designing unique, custom handcrafted jewelry for absolute strangers and wrapping
it up in great customer service, because a) it's fun, and b) if you're going to
do a thing, I think you should do it all the way and do it right. Attention to
detail and old-fashioned handcraftsmanship are very important to me, and to that
end, I am a proud member of the International Jewelry Designers' Guild. I also
think everyone deserves a little artisan-crafted, good-quality pretty at an affordable
price.
As for all those stones, I am happy to tell you I'm
still an equal opportunity employer of rocks and always pick one up when I visit
new places or want to commemorate an event. (I have some from France sitting on
my desk in a pretty little jar right this very minute!) While my favorite stones
are garnet, peridot, carnelian, and amazonite, I admit to not liking my natural
birthstone of turquoise very much at all. I live in Los Angeles, California, where
I design jewelry and the odd planting plan, occasionally work in television, read
a lot of books, belt a lot of showtunes out the car windows while stuck in traffic,
and proudly display my extensive collection of plain brown rocks.
If you would like a piece of Dragonfly jewelry crafted
